27th March 2012

Today i managed to get some of the bed dug but the more i dig the more roots i find and its soul destroying every fork reveals about 8-9 roots of i don't know what and the soil at the back bed is heavy clay. i managed to dig about 4ft after work and put in some onion sets but i may take this particular moment to have a change of plan. and maybe go for building raised beds on the plot just one set of planks to make a few beds and improve the soil on top of this clay.

Even pushing the onion sets in they were crunching a bit i think they are damaged. In the end i used a dibber to make a hole and pushed the sets in. but the signs aren't good.

25 March 2012

February was bypassed as i spent a lot of it away on holiday.

So its march i missed doing the digging i needed to do in Feb and now have to dig every time i want to plant out.
Ah well.
I managed to get down for a couple good weekends and now the clocks have gone forward its time to get in some midweek time down there. the weeds are starting to come through. i have my eyes on some black sheeting at work that's not being used. to cover up what parts of the allotment I'm not using and unable to dig.

I have also managed to acquire some planks of wood to make the first of the raised beds. I've just got to stain them and dig them into place. On my last visit i managed to put in my new potatoes in they have been dug into the top two beds. On advice of another allotment holder i was told to earth up the potatoes already so i followed his advice if its not brilliant i will change it next year. Its the only way to learn. on my last allotment i got it too late to put any in.

Next in the plan is the onion bed which will be behind the poly tunnel. Ive sowed some tomatoes and some lettuces in the poly tunnel too.
